The foot is comprised of muscles, tendons, and ligaments that work together to move the toes. If one or more of the muscles become weak, the medical condition that is known as hammertoe may develop. The second toe will bend at the middle joint, and may resemble a hammer. It is considered to be an imbalance in the toes, and may be caused for a variety of reasons. These can include wearing shoes that do have adequate room for the toes to move freely in, broken or stubbed toes, and genetics may play a significant role in the onset of hammertoe as well. Some of the symptoms that are associated with this condition may consist of pain and discomfort in the affected toe and surrounding areas, redness, swelling, and difficulty straightening the toe. If you are afflicted with this ailment, It is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can guide you toward proper treatment options which may include surgery.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.
Symptoms
Causes
Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible
Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur
Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe
Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe
Treatment
Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it
Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used
Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

This condition may inhibit blood supply to the feet, and it may be difficult to walk. Patients who are afflicted with PAD may experience a loss of feeling or a tingling sensation in the feet and legs, open sores which do not heal in a timely fashion, and the nails may become brittle. There are a variety of reasons why this condition may occur. These can consist of smoking, having elevated blood pressure, or being diabetic. Painful symptoms may be gradually diminished when gentle stretching techniques are frequently practiced, in addition to implementing healthy eating habits. If you are suffering from PAD, it is recommended that you consult with a podiatrist who can help you to manage this ailment.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is when arteries are constricted due to plaque (fatty deposits) build-up. This results in less blood flow to the legs and other extremities. The main cause of PAD is atherosclerosis, in which plaque builds up in the arteries.
Symptoms
Symptoms of PAD include:
It is important to note that a majority of individuals never show any symptoms of PAD.
Diagnosis
While PAD occurs in the legs and arteries, Podiatrists can diagnose PAD. Podiatrists utilize a test called an ankle-brachial index (ABI). An ABI test compares blood pressure in your arm to you ankle to see if any abnormality occurs. Ultrasound and imaging devices may also be used.
Treatment
Fortunately, lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, managing cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and quitting smoking, can all treat PAD. Medications that prevent clots from occurring can be prescribed. Finally, in some cases, surgery may be recommended.

Read more about Peripheral Artery DiseaseMany parents notice their children have flat feet. Research has indicated that the majority of babies are born flat-footed, and in most cases, it may be nothing to be concerned about. This happens as a result of bones that are still flexible. Typically, these bones will become stronger as the aging process occurs. It is important that toddlers walk barefoot as often as possible while indoors. This forces the toes to grip the floor, which generally strengthens the overall foot. When children begin to walk outside, wearing shoes that have a soft sole may be beneficial in sensing different surfaces. Additionally, it is important to ensure there is adequate room for the toes to move freely in. Laces or fasteners may help to provide the stability that is needed to keep the shoes on the feet. If you have concerns about the development of your child’s feet, it is advised that you counsel with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy
Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...
Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.
Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.
Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.
As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.
As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.
Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.
Be watchful for any pain or injury.
Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.
Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.
